Transition period

The transition period runs from about three weeks before calving to three weeks after. In that time the cow ends one pregnancy, begins lactation and changes ration, group and often housing.

Most metabolic and infectious disease of the lactation occurs in this window. Feeding and management aim to hold intake up before calving and restore it quickly afterwards.
