Feed efficiency

Feed efficiency in a dairy herd is the weight of milk produced per unit of dry matter eaten. To compare herds, milk is first corrected to a standard fat and protein content.

The figure moves with days in milk, forage digestibility, body condition change and heat stress, so it is best followed by group over time. A cow losing weight looks efficient for the wrong reason.
